Sat 8th, (D) 10:30-11:45 Surface Design, Fabric and Wax
Surface Design, Fabric and Wax. Fabric and wax have a long history together. Wax has been used in numerous cultures as a resist when dyeing fabric or as a strengthening/protecting element when added to fibers. This demonstration will introduce you to a variety of traditional and contemporary surface design techniques on fabric. The fabrics can then be collaged into encaustic. We will also use tools that can be adapted and used with the direct application of encaustic.

    2 days Mon-Tues; 9-4pm $185 (Material fee $20 )
Fabric and Wax have a long history together. Wax has been used as a resist in numerous cultures when applied to fabric before dyeing. This creates patterns and marks that are unique to the process. This workshop will focus on surface design techniques done on fabric. We will explore many contemporary techniques such as batik, discharge, stamping, sun printing and tie-dye to create uniquemark-making, surfaces and fabrics that can be embedded into wax. We will also experiment with traditional surface design tools and how they can be adapted and used directly with the encaustic processes. A great class for those who are new to the possibilities of surface design when incorporating fabric into encaustic.

In the afternoon the wax will heat up as we apply various encaustic processes to these paper supports, including waxglazes, dry brush accretions, layering and scraping. On the third day students will explore a variety of mixed media applications to wax including transfer, collage, pouring, embedding, foil and gold leaf. Throughout the workshop students will see demonstrations in bothpaper and encaustic technique and have ample time for guided exploration on their own with the ability to create several completed works. No experience in either papermaking or encaustic painting is required although the experienced papermaker or encaustic artist will find something new and challenging in experimenting with this dual media.

  • Norman Soskel

Norman Soskel took his first photograph at the age of four while playing piano competitively almost as long. An award winning photographer, Norman has been fascinated with encaustic because it allows him to go back to the hand-on manipulation of imagery that digital processing no longer requires. His current work continues to be about the visual and auditory aspects of the natural world.

Sat 8th, 10:30-11:45 (P) The Encaustic Serigraph, An Historical Perspective
Norman Soskel originally was drawn to serigraphy as a new way to portray his photographs in his work. With encaustic medium he found that he could combine both traditional screen printing and photography into something entirely new. His curiosity as to forerunners of this process led him to fascinating discoveries. In this digital presentation, you will meet those who experimented with this process and the woman who actually invented it.
